Silent Hill 2 2001

About

The second entry in the Silent Hill franchise, Silent Hill 2 is a narrative-focused third-person psychological survival horror game with emphasis on combat, exploration and puzzle-solving elements which follows James Sunderland, a man who receives a letter, seemingly sent by his three-years-deceased wife Mary, in which he is beckoned to the fog-ridden town of Silent Hill at the same time as numerous other people troubled by their past.

Story

James Sunderland has arrived in the town of Silent Hill after receiving a letter from his wife Mary, telling him to meet her in their special place in Silent Hill. However his wife died three years ago, and has kept the secrets surrounding her death. James decides to honor the letter's request, wondering if this is a sick joke or if there is more to this. As he reaches the outskirts of the town, James finds that the road is blocked, and parks at an abandoned restroom. Little does he realize that this is the first step forward into the mystery of Silent Hill and his own past.

What is happening now

The 2024 remake of the classic 2001 psychological horror title has become something of a technical proving ground since launch. Bloober Team's PS5 iteration struggled initially on the Pro hardware, though a series of patches have since addressed performance issues and visual problems, including improvements to fog rendering and overall stability. The updates haven't entirely resolved all concerns, with recent patches introducing new complications even as they attempted fixes. Beyond technical matters, the remake continues to generate activity across the industry. Bloober Team has moved on to a new horror project for Nintendo Switch 2, while the original remake has departed PlayStation Plus' subscription roster. Collectors can now acquire a recreation of the Lake View Hotel VHS tape as a physical collectible, and the remake has proven significant enough to serve as a benchmark for emerging PS5 emulation technology on PC.
