Fatal Fury is a fighting game developed by SNK and released for arcades in 1991. Players choose from a roster of martial artists and compete in one-on-one battles using punches, kicks, and special moves. The game introduced a two-plane fighting system that allows characters to move between foreground and background lanes. Its story follows Terry Bogard and his allies as they challenge the crime lord Geese Howard.
Story
The plot of Fatal Fury centers around a martial arts tournament known as the "King of Fighters" tournament, held in the fictional American city of South Town and sponsored by local crime boss Geese Howard. Ten years before the events of the game, Geese murdered a rival martial artist named Jeff Bogard, who was on his trail. Now, Jeff's adopted sons, Terry Bogard and Andy Bogard, along with their friend Joe Higashi, enter the tournament to get their revenge on Geese.
What is happening now
Fatal Fury is SNK's long-running 2D fighting game series, with the latest entry being City of the Wolves. The new iteration continues to expand its roster and content strategy through seasonal updates, currently in Season 3. Recent additions have included characters from Tokyo Revengers, with more crossover guests planned through the end of the year. The game has been generating considerable conversation around both gameplay mechanics and presentation. SNK commissioned a new animated short from director Masami Obari featuring Duck King and Rick Strowd, while character-specific details like Manjiro Sano's gender-reactive super move have sparked discussion about mechanical design choices. Mai's classic outfit arrived as paid DLC on most platforms, though Switch 2 players received it as a free pre-order bonus alongside the platform's launch version. The fighting game community has taken notice as well - prominent competitors have cited Fatal Fury as their competitive focus, while technical performance comparisons between versions have drawn player interest.
