Star Ocean is a long-running sci-fi action RPG franchise that debuted on Super Famicom in 1996. The series has seen renewed attention recently, highlighted by Square Enix's surprise Nintendo Switch 2 port of Star Ocean: The Second Story R, which delivers 1080p resolution and 60 FPS performance in both docked and handheld modes. The company has positioned this version as the definitive way to experience the classic JRPG. Beyond the Switch 2 release, Square Enix has been actively promoting the franchise's 30th anniversary. Both The Second Story R and Star Ocean: The Divine Force arrived DRM-free on GOG with launch discounts, while commemorative artwork from character designer Yukihiro Kajimoto featuring protagonists from across the series has been shared to mark the occasion. A Japanese retrospective covering the entire numbered series and its availability has also surfaced as part of the celebration.
