Vault Breaker

Vault Breaker is Bungie's experimental PvE mode for Marathon, the extraction shooter that launched in March on PC. The mode, which debuted as a limited-time offering, proved popular enough that Bungie decided to keep it permanently available rather than remove it as originally planned. The mode gives players a chance to explore Marathon's maps, particularly the Cryo Archive, without the pressure of competing against other players - a significant departure from the game's core PvP focus.

Since its introduction, Bungie has made several adjustments to smooth the experience. The solo queue time limit has been extended to 40 minutes, providing players with more opportunity to progress through runs. Vault Breaker has received mixed reception - while some players appreciate finally being able to engage with Marathon's map design on their own terms, others feel the mode falls short of expectations. Regardless, the decision to make it a permanent fixture suggests Bungie sees value in offering a PvE alternative to those less interested in competitive extraction gameplay.
