About
God of War: Laufey is an upcoming action-adventure game developed by Santa Monica Studio for PlayStation 5. The game follows Laufey, also known as Faye, after she awakens in a strange afterlife realm following her death. To protect Kratos and Atreus, she travels through the Everywhen, an afterlife of the gods where deities from different mythologies compete for power. The game shifts the focus from Kratos to Faye and features sword-based combat, magic, and new supporting characters.
Story
Death was supposed to be the end, but for Laufey (Faye), warrior and wife to Kratos, a new adventure is just beginning. Awakening unexpectedly in a strange land after her death, Faye discovers the plans she put in place to protect Kratos and Atreus in her absence are now at risk. To save the ones she loves, Faye must fight through the afterlife of the gods – the Everywhen – where ruthless gods from across mythology vie for power in a land overflowing with dangerous magic. Harness Faye's speed, control and relentlessness to overwhelm even the fiercest of foes with decisive, deadly precision.
What is happening now
God of War Laufey is an upcoming PS5 action-RPG launching February 2027, marking the series' first mainline entry to shift focus away from Kratos. The game will star Faye, Kratos' late wife, with actor Deborah Ann Woll taking the lead role. Santa Monica Studio has confirmed a physical disc release alongside the digital version. The announcement has generated considerable fan backlash, with some players resistant to the protagonist change. Woll has publicly brushed aside the negative reception, expressing confidence in the game's quality and maintaining distance from social media criticism. Meanwhile, reports suggest Sony anticipated the pushback and implemented stricter social media guidelines in response. The game was showcased at Comic-Con 2026 and Sony's State of Play, where extended gameplay footage was revealed. Development on another mainline God of War featuring Kratos is already in the works for a post-Laufey release.
