Story

When Captain Olimar's ship suffers a freak accident and crash-lands on the mysterious, Earth-like planet PNF-404, he is forced to recruit the strange plant-like creatures known as Pikmin to help recover its missing parts. After sending out a desperate SOS along with his voyage logs, Olimar inexplicably vanishes while continuing his search. His distress call reaches the Rescue Corps, an intergalactic rescue organization, which dispatches a team led by Captain Shepherd to save him. But their ship malfunctions on arrival, scattering the crew across the planet's surface. With the mission in jeopardy, the Rescue Corps' newest recruit, the player, is sent down to locate the missing rescuers and Olimar himself. Aided by a loyal rescue pup named Oatchi and an army of Pikmin, the recruit sets out across a perilous alien world.

What is happening now

Pikmin 4 is a real-time strategy adventure that launched on Nintendo Switch in mid-2023. The game tasks players with commanding tiny plant-like creatures to solve puzzles and gather resources across alien environments. Nearly three years after its original release, Nintendo has announced a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition arriving in November 2026. This version will introduce Dandori Academy, a new mode focused on testing players' item-collection abilities and skills. The expansion represents Nintendo's broader effort to refresh popular Switch titles for its next-generation hardware, following similar re-releases of franchises like Zelda, Mario, Kirby, and Pokémon.
