Shenmue came out on December 29, 1999 for Dreamcast, then for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on August 20, 2018 and for PC on August 21, 2018. The main story takes about 40 hours, doing everything about 120 hours.

"He shall appear from a far Eastern land across the sea. A young man who has yet to know his potential. This potential is a power that can either destroy him, or realize his will. His courage shall determine his fate. The path he must traverse, fraught with adversity, I await whilst praying. For this destiny predetermined since ancient times... A pitch, black night unfolds with the morning star as its only light. And thus the saga, begins..." This first chapter of Shenmue kicks off Yu Suzuki's cinematic Dreamcast tour-de-force, an exploration-heavy adventure that has players immerse themselves in Yokosuka, Japan. Players slip into the role of a young martial artist named Ryo Hazuki, who is on the trail of his father's killer. On the way, players must talk with hundreds of characters, engage in martial arts battles, and marvel at the realistic depiction of the Japanese coastal town.

What is happening now

Shenmue is a narrative-driven action RPG that blends combat, exploration, and life simulation elements across multiple platforms including the original Dreamcast release. The series follows protagonist Ryo Hazuki's quest for revenge across detailed recreations of Japan and Hong Kong, combining martial arts combat with investigative gameplay and everyday activities. Recently, the franchise has become the subject of a grassroots campaign calling for a fourth installment. A UK election candidate used their platform to publicly appeal to Sega for the game's continuation, reflecting the enduring passion of Shenmue's dedicated fanbase. Despite the long gap since the third game's release, the series continues to maintain cultural presence through fan advocacy and continued interest in its story.
