A young boy has come to a distant village to visit his grandmother. Arriving at the final station, in some wilderness, we find newspaper clippings on the platform. This is where our tangled story begins.

Village in the Shade is a rural life simulation from the creators of Yomawari that tasks players with building and maintaining a village. The game launched in Japan in late July 2023 to positive reception, quickly accumulating over 100,000 sales domestically in its first week, with physical copies selling out across retailers. The game has since secured a broader release schedule, arriving on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch platforms in late October 2023, followed by a western launch planned for fall. The simulation appears to emphasize infrastructure management and village development, though with a distinctly different tone from conventional city builders - coverage notes it carries an unsettling atmosphere despite its cosy premise.
