An officially endorsed box set of Manic Miner creator Matthew Smith’s ZX Spectrum games is coming
The Matthew Smith Collection includes new cassettes of his games
The 1983 platformer Manic Miner, originally created by Matthew Smith for the ZX Spectrum, is getting a modern revival. BBG Entertainment is handling an authorized relaunch with a pixel-perfect recreation arriving on Nintendo Switch this fall, alongside PC, Xbox, and PlayStation versions, featuring all twenty original levels.
The revival has drawn scrutiny over BBG Entertainment's marketing approach. The announcement trailer sparked community backlash over suspected generative AI usage, leading the publisher to acknowledge fan concerns and confirm GenAI was employed during production - specifically to meet tight deadlines around Gamescom. Separately, an officially endorsed box set of Smith's classic ZX Spectrum titles is also in the works.
