About

Doom 3 is a first-person shooter with survival horror elements. Played mostly from a first-person perspective, it sends the player through the corridors and facilities of a research base, fighting waves of enemies while managing limited resources. A signature design choice forces the player to choose between holding a weapon or a flashlight, encouraging a slower, tense pace built around darkness and ambush. The game uses a story-driven structure supported by radio messages, audio logs, and data devices that unlock areas and reveal information. It also includes a separate deathmatch-focused multiplayer mode.

Story

Doom 3 is set on Mars in 2145, where a powerful corporation runs a research facility experimenting in areas such as teleportation, biological research, and advanced weapons, often outside legal and ethical limits. The player takes the role of a newly arrived space marine assigned to routine duties at the base. When a teleportation experiment loses containment, a gateway to Hell is torn open and the facility is overrun, transforming much of the personnel into hostile creatures. Cut off and outnumbered, the marine must fight through the base to survive, uncover what the experiments unleashed, and stop the invasion from spreading beyond Mars.

What is happening now

Doom 3 is the 2004 sci-fi reimagining of id Software's landmark shooter, moving the franchise's action to a research facility on Mars with an emphasis on atmospheric horror and flashlight-driven combat. The game launched across PC, Xbox, Mac, and Linux platforms. Two decades after its release, the modding community continues to find ways to extend Doom 3's lifespan. A fan project that ports the entirety of Doom 2's map collection into Doom 3's engine has seen renewed attention, with a fresh build released recently as part of QuakeCon 2026 celebrations. The effort, which began over a decade ago, demonstrates the enduring appeal of revisiting classic id Software designs through a more modern technical lens.
