Story

The year is 1274. Samurai warriors are the legendary defenders of Japan — until the fearsome Mongol Empire invades the island of Tsushima, wreaking havoc and conquering the local population. As one of the last surviving samurai, you rise from the ashes to fight back. But, honorable tactics won’t lead you to victory. You must move beyond your samurai traditions to forge a new way of fighting — the way of the Ghost — as you wage an unconventional war for the freedom of Japan.

What is happening now

Ghost of Tsushima is a samurai-focused action RPG that arrived on PlayStation 4 in 2020 and has since been ported to PlayStation 5. The game blends sword combat with exploration across feudal Japan, establishing itself as a significant entry in the action adventure genre. The franchise continues expanding beyond the original game. Crunchyroll, under Sony's wing, is developing an anime adaptation that was showcased at Anime Expo, signaling the property's growing presence in entertainment. Meanwhile, the game's co-creator is involved with Unleash the Avatar, a soulslike action RPG drawing on Indian mythology in development at Aeos Games. The influence of Ghost of Tsushima's combat and aesthetic has also begun appearing in independent projects, with new action RPGs on platforms like Steam adopting similar Eastern fantasy approaches to established genre formulas.
